Walk to Nubble Light from Candleshop Inn

Inn owners, Barbara and Michael relaxing on the front porch of the Inn.

Over forty years ago, Barbara and Michael Sheff came to York Beach, Maine with their daughter, who was then an infant. This trip started a long-term love affair with Maine! They found York Beach was a great destination for them ... the perfect respite from their hectic lives in Newton, Massachusetts.

The Sheffs purchased the Inn at 44 Freeman Street, York Beach in 1999 and have been operating the bed and breakfast property as a holistic Inn for that entire period. In the years since their purchase, they have done expansive renovations and improvements to the property including remodeling all existing guest rooms and bathrooms, as well as adding several additional bathrooms. They've increased guest common areas by adding a large outdoor deck, a Japanese meditation garden and other perennial and herb gardens. Most recently, they've added their own owners' quarters, situated behind the Inn.

Barbara Sheff is a retired microbiologist. Several years ago, Barbara went back to school and became certified as a holistic nurse (HNC). Husband, Michael, is a pediatric dentist (DMD) who has a special interest in caring for patients with developmental disabilities. The Sheffs bring their focus on wellness and compassion for people to their innkeeper "job" at Candleshop Bed and Breakfast Inn!

Today, the couple has three grown children and a growing family with three grandchildren and another due in 2012. They are pleased to share their Maine beach home and tips on their favorite spots on Maine's southern coast with you!
